We’ve finished Roald Dahl’s classic book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His most popular book, it was later turned into two movies. He wrote the script for the first, and has since distanced himself from it due to issues during production. We loved this book, it’s a spectacular example of ‘voice’ in writing.
We’ve started to read our first chapter book of the year, Sideways Stories from Wayside School. It’s a great introduction into longer books because all of the chapters are self contained stories, they’re funny, timeless and interlocked between each other. There are several other books in the series, and Sachar has also written ‘Holes’ which was turned into a movie.
We just finished ‘The Chocolate Touch’, which is a clever retelling of the King Midas tale. This time it feathers John Midas, a boy obsessed with all things candy, and above all, chocolate. After a magical encounter with a sweet shop, everything he eats starts to turn into chocolate in his mouth. A gift or a curse? (spoiler: it’s a curse!)
